Time

Time is a central concept for The Homework Trap. There is much debate about how much homework should be assigned. Typically we set a time based standard (e.g. ten minutes per night per grade).  But time for homework is an estimate of time, not a number that gets fixed by the clock. Children (homework trapped children, for sure) need time based, not content based homework requirements. A child who is instructed to spend 30 minutes doing homework and told that he can stop when those 30 minutes are up, will use the time more productively than one who is required to keep working until the assignment is done.
